Luon Grotto

Luon Grotto

Luon Cave is located in the south of Halong Bay, about 14 km south-east of Tuan Chau Island. Situated on Bo Hon Island and only 1 km away from Surprise Cave, this grotto is an open air cave, exposed to the elements, and which can only be accessed by boat. The cave is essentially a group of islands that have joined to form a brackish lake approximately 1 km in circumference.

To enter the cave, visitors pass under a 100 metre long arch that is 3 metres wide, and depending on tidal flows, between 2.5 and 4 metres high. The arch was form by erosion over millions of years.

Once they have passed under the arch, visitors to Luon Cave are met with sheer limestone cliffs plunging into the cool, green lake. Lavender Cruise guests who opt to kayak can paddle at their leisure around the lake, and experience the serenity of the grotto at their own pace.

Those who are not confident kayakers can use the bamboo boat service provided by the locals and enjoy a relaxing, natural experience. The cave is home to a rich and diverse ecology and the lake supports myriad species of fish, shellfish and molluscs including shrimp, squid, crab and cuttlefish.

In a boat or a kayak, visitors may spot cheeky monkeys climbing the cliffs, delicate and fragrant orchids thriving in rocky outcrops, and weeping figs providing solace from the elements. Cycads and ferns dot the cliffs, remnants of an ancient time long past.

Traveller reviews

One of the best place for kayaking!

“Luon” cave owes the name to its exceptional shape. In front of the steep cliff rising from the water is an arched entrance leading to the grotto. You can get through then entrace by kayaking through a quite small and narrow bow-shaped gate. I feel like I’m in an action movie exploring the mysterious land of Halong Bay!

Kunisada Chikafusa – Japan

A beautiful harmony of heaven and earth

After passing by a bow-shaped entrance, you will witness a calm lake with sky blue water, cliffs, ancient trees and blooming orchids. Unlike other places in Halong which is spoilt by tourism, the marine life is diverse and various such as shrimp, fish, crab,…Such vibrant life of species make me feel much closer to the wild.

Kim Lee – Korea

A beauty you can’t miss on Halong Bay

There’s a small part of island where you’re able to swim in the sky blue water. If you’r fit enough and want to excercise a bit then don’t hesitate to clim to the top of the island to get the bird view of the whole island. It’s truly exceptional! From this view you’ll have a clear sight of the enormous number of limstones karst around the Bay which is unbelievable.

Surprise Cave

Surprise Cave
Discovered by the French in 1901 and originally named “Grotte des Surprises”, this limestone karst grotto is a rewarding experience after a steep climb on Bo Hon Island, northwest Halong Bay, about 15 km south-east of Tuan Chau Marina and 15 km southern of Bai Chay wharf.

At approximately 25 m above sea level, this kind of karst cave occupies around 10,000 m2 and comprises two caverns, each as beautiful and fascinating as the other. After a steep climb of around 50 steps to get to the mouth of the cave – which is sheltered by natural vegetation – visitors will be able to step into another world: a world that combines the cool mystery of Sung Sot Cave with soft, diffused light from the outside world.

The first chamber of Sung Sot Cave is known as the waiting room and is around 30 metres high. It is accessed by walking down a flight of 10 steps from the mouth of the cave. With walls eroded by Mother Nature and squarish in shape, the waiting room provides a grand entrance to a larger, second chamber, which is reached by a narrow path joining the two caves. It is the moment when tourists coming to Sung Sot enter the second chamber and understand why it is called the Surprise Cave. An “Opera House” appears in front you with a various number of flowstones, stalactites, stalagmites and columns forming thoughout millions of years.

The second, or inner chamber, is so enormous that it could hold a thousand people at one any time. Above and below are magnificent stalactites and stalagmites extend from the floor and ceiling that sometimes can meet in unison. Besides, there is a meandering path around the chamber that gives tourists a view of the cave from different angles, and the light from outside, when coupled with the cave’s coloured and enhanced lighting, which eventually creates a magical world, perfect for photographs.

Nearly put off by the stairs but they were no problem as plenty of chances to stop take photo’s and rest legs. This is so worth the time and you won’t be disappointed. It has pathways which are easy to use and again you can take photos inside the cave of the amazing sights nature has given us.

Ti Top Island

Ti Top Island

If you’ve ever seen a picture of Halong Bay, probably it was taken from the top of Ti Top Island. While it is a steep climb of a few hundred steps to the observation deck on the summit of Ti Top moutain that reveals a panoramic view of Halong Bay – it is still definitely worth the effort. The 360° view is nothing short of breathtaking, which you can spend an hour or more at the summit viewing and photographing Halong Bay.

Ti Top Island is visited by thousands of tourists daily, and is on Lavender Cruises itineraries, with a beneficial reason: for many this is one of the highlights of their Halong Bay experience. Even more, after climbing, you can reward yourself with a cool, refreshing dip in the waters of Halong Bay.

The beach on the island is one of the most organised in all of Halong Bay for tourists, with deck chairs, cool drinks, souvenirs, and fresh water showers available. You can swim or sunbathe, or spend some time relaxing in deck chair, sipping on a coconut and people watching.

Ti Top was named after a visit of the famous Russian cosmonaut, Gherman Stepanovich Titov. He was the second person to orbit the earth and the first to spend an entire day in space on 6 August 1961, aboard Vostok 2, preceded by Yuri Gagarin on Vostok 1.

Gherman Titov visited the island on 22 Jan 1962, accompanied by President Ho Chi Minh. Uncle Ho decided to change the name of the island from Cat Nang to Ti Top to commemorate the relationship between Russia and Vietnam as well as the occasion. In the centre of the island is a commemorative stone stelae and Titov monument, a 26 tonnes block of bluestone, 6 metres height. Titov returned to Halong Bay on 22 June 1997 and wrote: “My deepest thanks to destiny, which has allowed me to come back to this tiny island.”

Well worth the climb

Heads up! It will take you about 400 steep steps to get to the top of the island, but I can guarantee the view won’t disappoint you. I came up for the sunset and witnessing the sun hiding itself behing enormous limestones of Halong Bay was spectacular. Best place for your instagram post!

Brice Khan – Singapore

Breathtaking view of HaLong Bay

Just so you know it’s not gonna be a hidden place with no tourists at all. Sure it’s crowded. But when you go pass that and a few hundreds of steps, a 360 view of the whole Ha Long Bay will amaze you with its heavenly beauty. Should totally include Ti Top Island in your initiary.

Brice Hyde – Canada

A beautiful gem in the middle of Ha Long Bay
